Recently, the public was shocked by the news that said that reusable gallons were more dangerous than single-use gallons. It is stated that the used or reused gallon packaging releases Bisphenol-A (BPA) which is harmful to health and triggers hormonal disorders and cancer. The government and food experts have firmly dismissed this and stated that it was a hoax that misled consumers.

director Industry Beverages, Tobacco Products and Refreshing Materials of the Ministry of Industry, Edy Sutopo, in a media discussion webinar with the theme, "Aligning Packaging Safety with Nature Conservation", Tuesday (15/9/2020), guarantees Product Bottled water (AMDK) in good gallons polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polycarbonate (PC) is safe for consumption as long as the final product has passed the SNI parameter testing process. This is because supervision has been carried out regularly, including supervision of facilities and the process of cleaning reusable gallons.

According to Edy, the Tara Pangan logo must also be included on plastic food packaging. Bottled drinking water that uses PET and PC packaging is included in food grade packaging materials that can be recycled. "So AMDK products that already have SNI and have the Taranya Logo are safe for consumption," he said.

Legal basis for application Mandatory SNI from the AMDK industry is contained in Permenperin Number 26 of 2019 concerning Enforcement Standar Indonesian National Mineral Water, Demineral Water, Natural Drinking Water, and Compulsory Dew Drinking Water.

Meanwhile, Permen Number 96/M-IND/PER/12/2011 regulates the Technical Requirements for the Bottled Drinking Water Industry. Even in Ministerial Regulation No. 4 of 2019 it is also regulated on assessment and conformity institutions in the context of mandatory enforcement and supervision of SNI for mineral water, demineralized water, natural drinking water, and dew drinking water.

Meanwhile, Permenperin Number 24/M-IND/PER/2010 concerning Inclusion of Food Grade Logo and Recycling Code on Plastic Food Packaging. The Food Tara logo is a marking indicating that a food packaging is safe to use for food.

The same thing was conveyed by the Director of High Risk Food Supervision and New Technology, Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), Ema Setyawati that BPOM has BPOM Regulation Number 20 of 2019 concerning Food Packaging which regulates the requirements that must be met by plastic packaging before being distributed.

According to him, before circulating in the community, bottled drinking water products have gone through a very long process, starting from pre-market to post-market.

"So the standard of safety and quality of bottled drinking water has been tested. As long as the BPA migration for PC plastic or acetaldehyde migration for PET plastic is still below the threshold and the plastic packaging is used according to its designation, the gallons are safe to use," he said.

Food Technology expert from the Bogor Agricultural Institute, Eko Hari Purnomo, added that ensuring the safety and quality of bottled water must be carried out thoroughly, starting from maintaining the quality of raw water by protecting the environment around water sources, maintaining the integrity and cleanliness of the packaging used, treating water hygienically. , to distribute it to consumers.

"And various existing studies show that the use of reusable packaging made from polycarbonate does not show a higher release of packaging chemical components into water than single-use packaging," he said.

In fact, said Eko, the use of reusable packaging provides a double advantage, namely maintaining product safety and reducing plastic waste in the environment.

Therefore, the Association of Bottled Water Companies (Aspadin) also regrets the existence of fake news (hoax) stating that reused gallon bottled drinking water is more dangerous than disposable gallons.

Chairman of Aspadin, Rachmat Hidayat, emphasized that AMDK products with PC and PET gallon packaging circulating in the market have obtained the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) certificate and distribution permit from BPOM RI.

"That means the product has been audited and evaluated, both in terms of production facilities, cleaning of reused gallons, product safety and several other quality aspects," he said.
