The number of people's markets or traditional markets is decreasing from year to year. Based on data from Yayasan Peduli Danamon, in 2007 the number of people's markets reached 13.550, decreased to 13.450 in 2009, to 9.950 in 2011, and shrunk to 9.559 in 2015. “People's markets are vulnerable to disasters. Last year 283 markets caught fire. If we look at 2014 the number of people's markets fell by 8,1%, while the modern market rose by 31,4%,” said Chairman of Danamon Peduli Foundation, Restu Pratiwi, during a discussion at Danamon Headquarters, Jakarta, yesterday.
Whereas the people's market has many functions as a storefront, character, public space, tourism potential, culinary portraits, to absorb labor for an area. Therefore, Danamon Peduli welcomes the revitalization of traditional markets, especially in obtaining SNI 8152:2015 concerning the people's market as a standard and clear reference in the implementation of the people's market. As a government partner, Restu admitted that he had budgeted IDR 565 million to support and facilitate the development of SNI implementation in several of his target markets, namely the prosperous market (healthy, green, clean, well-maintained). "We help from physical and non-physical aspects, institutions, and financing, because the people's market as a provider of standard needs needs to change the behavior of consumers, traders, and managers, and requires local government commitment," Restu continued.
The assistance provided includes waste treatment installations, 20% of which originate from solid and liquid waste, as well as incentive assistance after years of revitalization to change the behavior of consumers, traders, managers, and local governments. For Restu, local governments need to map traditional markets to maintain local culture and wisdom. Local governments can replicate prosperous markets, improve market management, and declare a national market day. Not easy On that occasion, Acting Director of Logistics and Distribution Facilities of the Directorate General of Domestic Trade of the Ministry of Trade, Robert James Bintaryo, said that implementing SNI for traditional markets is indeed not easy and requires more intensive efforts. "For managers, it is not easy, it does need to be done more intensively," said Robert. Currently, one of the Ministry of Trade's programs is to revitalize 5.000 markets by 2019. In 2015, 1.010 markets were recorded as having been revitalized, both to improve the physical condition of the market, the economy , socio-cultural aspects, and also its management. Of the 1.010 revitalized markets, 182 were revitalized using assistance funds. For the other 65 markets, revitalization funds came from the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises , and 763 markets from special allocation funds. "Of course, we hope all (of them ) will have SNI certification , not just the 5.000 markets, but also other markets that are already in good condition," said Robert. The parameters for SNI certification for traditional markets include aspects of trading space, accessibility, and zoning. This also includes compliance with market management aspects.
